Your Top 3 Visual Novels

Recommended Posts

What are your top three favorite visual novels? They don't have to be the three you think are the best, just your three favorites. I wonder what your choices will say about you...

I'm not usually into chuuni games, but damn if I don't love Fate/stay night. For one thing, it has Rin, who is totally waifu tier. I'm also a huge fan of history and mythology, so I have a field day with all the references in the game. Basically, Fate aimed for my weak spots.

...Speaking of weak spots, Hatsuyuki Sakura went straight for the kill with sad girls in snow. I simply cannot resist a good nakige, especially one set in winter. And Saga Planets tossed in a supernatural heroine, too. It makes me wanna「ぴゃー!!」:cuteblush:

Ever17, the first visual novel I ever completed, way back in 2006. I can't even begin to describe the impact it made on my life. Even if it hadn't set the course for my future career, I'd still love it just as much. Really, the game is a masterpiece. It's the only title I've given a 10 on VNDB. If you like science fiction at all, you need to play this. Shame it's long out of print.

#1: Dies Irae - Amantes Amentes

"Basically Fate/Stay Night but with nazis".
When I read this comment on Steam I thought "I definitely have to try out this one".
Well, I loved every single chapter of this VN. And I played the censored version, but I plan to buy the uncensored one because I need to see Sakurai naked. A complete re-play, of course. This VN deserves it, after all.
Any other word spent on this VN wouldn't make it justice and would be spoiler, so I stop.

#2: Remember11 - The Age of Infinity

A friend of mine suggested me to try Ever17. But since I like going on VNDB and try to search for random VNs in general, I found out there were 2 other translated titles from the same company. The first one being Never7, which I liked really much but not as much as the other two. Ever17 didn't attract me completely but

Spoiler

the way the author used the classic "read the game from the main character's point of view" to hide the difference between the two kids until the end

was fucking awesome and whoever thought about it is a genius and deserves a fucking statue.
The third one is Remember11. Well. What can I say. I like games where you don't understand an absolute shit until the end. And I like them more when you have to discover yourself the truth by using your brain. Remember11 made my brain explode. I stayed up late for nights and nights trying to understand things, re-reading certain chapters and browsing the internet to read discussions and come up with a theory.
The two main characters are awesome (Kokoro is love). And the way the VN is built is very interesting (there are two routes and you play each route from the point of view of a different character, the girl first and the boy after). Sometimes I still find myself singing the opening. Recommended for everyone who wants to destroy their brain.
No seriously, I still have to understand completely what the fuck did happen in the story. And I've read Umineko, I should be used to the feeling.

#3: Umineko no Naku Koro ni

And since I'm talking about it, I think the third place is for Umineko.
There are many reasons to explain why I placed Umineko third instead of Fate/Stay Night or Grisaia or 11Eyes (ye, 11Eyes is part of my top10), but the best reason  is that creepy witch laugh I use on my phone for when I get a message. Gahahahaha!

In no particular order these are my three absolute favorite visual novels, i'm not really able to place them in a  best to worst order, just the top three i have.

Princess Evangile with the fandisc, it's really enjoyable for a huge rom-com fan like myself, i still weep over the fact that Mitsuki only has a fan disc route as she's my absolute favorite character in the game. Given that i'd probably go with Ritsuko as the main game winner.

If my heart had wings, say what you want about the quality of the translation, it's certianly not perfect, not even by a longshot. But i absolutley loved Kotori's story in this game, i pretty much ignored the other routes, i did try Ageha, but cencored or not, her route and her character in her own route is just....blergh, having it uncencored would just make it worse in my opinion :P So as far as i'm concerned, Kotori's route is the main game and thats it! ^^

A Sky full of stars, is probably my third on the list, again i really enjoyed the game, but not all routes, i absolutley adored Saya as a character and loved her route the most, i felt her story also tied the best into the main story. While i liked Hikari more then Ageha from If my heart had wings, i still hated how she ended up in her own route, too many similarities to Ageha in my opinion. Orihimes route was also quite enjoyable, but i felt she didn't fit as well with the overal story, Korona i was never that much a fan of so her route was completed mostly because i just had her left.

Honorable mentiones goes to Fureraba and Momoiro Closet, both extremly enjoyable, but a couple of things made them not enter my top three, for Fureraba it's simply because while i love the 4 girls, the main character sometimes anoyed the living crap out of me :P Momoiro closet didn't have the same problem, the main characters were both great, and the sweet route was a great rom-com story, but it suffered from being such a short game. In my opinion they should have cut the "spicy" route, which was basically just porn, and just focused on the sweet route, making it longer.

This list might change in the upcoming months though as there are a TONN of titles i'm anticipating.

from Mangagamer: Hapymaher, Bokuten, Amatarasu Riddle Star and Trinoline

From Sol Press: Newton and the apple tree, this just sounds hilarious and i can't wait to play it (should release any day now if steam would just approve it) Sakura Sakura, and their third title that i forget the name at the moment.

NekoNyansoft, everything they have anounced seems fun :P

So simply enough

1. Muv-Luv Alternative: What else can I say, It's the best visual novel I've played to date! war, struggle, depression. Oh and let's not forget aliens, mechs, and god damn PTSD!? Wow this game changed my entire outlook on life and I can't forget it ever!

2. Rewrite: If by chance you haven't played this gem then go do it now! First it was made by Key so you know it'll be good. Second It's all connected all the routes and everything and man does the game evolve so much over the play through. I honestly wish someone would clear my mind of this so I could experience it again. I can't stress enough how much of an incredibly momentous game this is.

3. Chronoclock: A nice run of the mill game, choose a girl and get the girl. Except this has a really interesting story and plot. Things you wouldn't expect to happen, happen alot. The art is good, the girls are enticing and frankly any game that lets me bang the goddess of time, bonus points!

Contenders

Grisaia: Great story, great characters, great art and it just feels unique. You know that feeling you get when you look at a game or character and you just know it'll be forgettable or generic or just play boring? well this is the opposite. It's like the difference between Hatsune Miku and generic background character A.

Steins;Gate: Do I even need to explain this one? It's like death note, you may not have watched it or read it. But you know it's good.

#1 - Majikoi S

Spoiler

This game is the most hilarious thing I've ever played and at some time it didn't even surprised me anymore.
I was like "oh, It's Kawakami, everything can happen at Kawakami"
The routes are amazing as well (Tsubame best girl) and I think how their friendship are portrayed is the charm of the whole series.

#2 - If My Heart Had Wings

Spoiler

I think everyone at least one time dreamed about flying and I think that's the reason why I like this VN so much, because it's easy to relate to their dream and the emotional rush that I felt while playing this game isn't a joke either.

#3 - Deardrops

Spoiler

The main reason why I loved this game so much is the musical environment.
Also the songs, the OST is awesome.

My favorites

1 - CLANNAD - this was the first visual novel I read, picked it up on steam after seeing some of Fredrin's (MegaTokyo) fans talk about it, and it got me hooked on visual novels.   I absolutely love this game, and still replay it from time to time.

2 - Comyu, Black Dragon in a Gentle Kingdom

3 - Princess Evangile

So I guess my favorites are all over the map...

In terms of the ones I've read...

1. Umineko - I started reading it December last year, currently reading chapter 7 (waited for the Answer Arc to be on steam sale). It can be fun, dark, intriguing and it's probably got me interested in the mystery genre. I can confidently say I feel like I've gained something from reading it, and not just a boner. Also the music is great.

2. Hoshimemo - I think this was my first romance themed reads, excluding Katawa Shoujo anyway, so I've got some nostalgic bias here I'm sure... I really like the art and the characters, even if they are somewhat generic. There are definitely visual novels that I would say have better art, but either I haven't read them myself or the stories of are like... ehhhhh nekopara.

3. Saya no Uta - I think I like these moral questioning types the best, but other than Saya no Uta I haven't read much more. I love it but it's not a long or completely pleasant read. It doesn't get me thinking like Umineko and I would say the art, what little of it there is, is a bit outdated... One hell of a rollercoaster though, I seem to like a lot of Nitroplus's / Gen Urobuchi's works.

Honourable mentions to Grisaia, I read 50% of the first game, loved it, but then the anime came out and I ruined it for myself by watching it, and I haven't continued reading the visual novel since... yaaaaaaay...

That being said, there are a ton of anime adaptations I've watched and loved such as Clannad, Phantom of Inferno, the Fate series (Though I'm getting sick of all the sequels/spin-offs), which I may never get to read anyway, so it's a bit of a trade-off.

If you're interested in mystery genre, I recommend G-senjou no maou (Devil on the G-string), which I really enjoyed.

As for Grisaia, I've never seen the anime, so I don't know how much it covered, but the story in the second and third games was very enjoyable for me, so I hope you pick the Grisaia trilogy back up at some point, I think it's well worth the read!

Also, words cannot adequately describe my loathing for Michiru   But I enjoyed the trilogy despite her existence, lol.
